First Story Launch Evening
Pimlico Academy played host to a launch event for First Story, a creative writing access programme that has turned many of our conscientious students into enthusiastic, budding writers.
The charity aims to nurture the development of young people and their interest in creative writing, and to act as a bridging point between young people and the wider literary community. The charity has been transforming young people's lives through the power of the spoken word!
It also provides many career development and skills training opportunities that many of our students have taken advantage of, through the charity's long-standing connection with our established English Department.
The Launch Evening, hosted at Future Academies Head office, above Pimlico Academy on Wednesday 4 July, provided the opportunity for students involved in First Story's programme to present the creative writing pieces they have been working on over the last year.
One of the speakers at the event was Caroline Bird, an established writer, poet and playwright, who is one of First Story's writers-in-residence. She shared some of her work with the captivated audience.
The sound poet and playwright Hannah Silva also spoke at the event. She is known for her innovative explorations of form, voice and language. Her sound poetry video, Pluto is a Planet! is one of her many innovative pieces, that fractures the boundary between poetry and performance art.
We are looking forward to another year of involvement with First Story, as it has shown time and time again the power of writing, and how it can transform lives, as Abdi's story below demonstrates.
Good luck to all our First Story writers - and don't stop expressing yourselves.
